The Concise Playbook: Engaging Employees on Sustainability

Sustainability leaders know they can not deliver ambitious sustainability plans on their own; they need to engage individuals across their organisations. In fact, many sustainability strategies have failed because insufficient attention and resource have been put behind employee engagement in sustainability. To respond to the challenge, Ocki’s Concise Playbook is a quick reference for those starting, or wanting to reboot, their engagement programme.

Who is the playbook for?

Ocki’s Concise Playbook on Engaging Employees in Sustainability provides advice for all those with responsibility for sustainability in organisations.

What does it deliver?

It is designed to help you establish a systematic approach to raise awareness and inspire and activate employees so they think and work more sustainably. Workers that can relate their role and team objectives to their employer’s strategic objectives and commitments will more likely deliver success and the benefits associated with a more resilient organisation.  

How does it help?

The Playbook introduces the ’engagement cycle’ as a framework for planning, preparing, acting, embedding and measuring activities, providing a more systematic approach to engagement, and building processes for continuous improvement.

 

To help you transform your employee engagement in sustainability, the Playbook lists:

  • success factors and top tips to help you identify what’s worked for others, and challenges to help flag potential pitfalls;
  • elements to assess, during the ’planning’ stage, to ensure your engagement strategy matches where your organisation is on its sustainability journey, your organisation’s capacity to change, and the current situation regarding employee engagement;
  • key allies that you need to get onboard and involve in sustainability as you ’prepare’ to engage;
  • routes to ’acting’, including prioritisation, collaboration and skills, as well as tips for working with other functions;
  • actions to ’embed’ sustainability and suggestions of how to address roadblocks; and
  • information on how to measure employee engagement (although this is not standardised) and set targets.

The advice in the Playbook was gathered during a series of Roundtables hosted by Ocki earlier this year.
