Playbook on best practice for engaging employees in sustainability

Ocki’s research shows that most organisations believe sustainability should be part of every employees’ role. However, in reality, people find it difficult to translate sustainability to department and team activities, as well as their own roles. To address this challenge, Ocki is hosting a series of roundtables with a group of organisations to discuss best practices, with the aim of developing a playbook for engaging employees in sustainability.

The main objective of the roundtables and playbook is to raise awareness about sustainability among employees and help them to relate an organisation’s sustainability strategy to their role, and team and department objectives. Through the roundtables and wider research Ocki will collect best practice examples of effective strategies to raise employee awareness about sustainability, which will inform a playbook, which will be made available to organisations.

Representatives from eight businesses joined a kick-off session on 12 January, which discussed an overall framework for the playbook. It was agreed the following sections should be included:

  • Scope, setting the scene, context;
  • Objectives, benefits & value proposition;
  • Involving the right people;
  • Getting started;
  • Strategies & process for connecting people to sustainability;
    • knowledge & skills;
    • tools & resources;
  • Measuring progress and success, targets;
  • Embedding practices & maintaining momentum.

To discuss these topics in more detail, four follow-up Roundtables have been organised on 26 January, 9 and 23 February and 9 March (see side bar for more information and registration form).

Check back in coming the coming weeks to see how the discussions are going; and if you can’t join in, but have questions you are struggling with, or examples of effective practice, please let us know at getintouch@ockisustainability.com
